Landscape
Statement of intent
My chosen theme for my GCSE project is going to be Landscape and I am going to look at different types of landscapes such as lakes, trees miniature landscape, urban landscape and possibly even my own local landscape I have chosen to do this theme because it is creative and we are surround by different landscape.
I am going to start with an open brief that will allow me to try out lots of different techniques regarding landscape.
In order to produce a successful creative and individual final main project ,I need to start by doing some in depth research around my chosen theme. The way I am going to do this is to use the internet and research famous photographers who use landscape as their theme, looking at magazines and books will also help me to gain some inspiration. My starting point will be to create a mind map and a mood board, where I will express my ideas and thoughts of how I see and how I feel what the theme landscape means to me.
I would like to look at three famous photographers to begin with.
I could also set up a pinterest account as this will help me with ideas later in the project to help when I am going to manipulate my photographs to refine my ideas of how I will represent landscape.
I hope to explore lots of different options so that I can build up an intricate understanding of my chosen theme Landscape.
I need to have a wide range of research using a variety of different media to ensure that my research is well informed and in depth, this will allow me to to create a successful project and will help inspire my ideas for my final images which will be backed up with a creative project that demonstrates my personal response to the theme. The project will allow me to explore and develop my photography website and I will record all my ideas in my portfolio.
I intend to capture a wide range of different shoots for this project. Studio shoots that explore texture in the landscape (bark, moos, litchen) Go to my local area and document the landscape around me.
n year 10 we are going to the Lake District an amazing place to be able to focus on capturing the natural landscape, and I will be able to focus on the autumn colours and soft light. I will use the inspiration from the photographers that I will research to help me with my photographs that I will capture.
I could use my portrait techniques and combine it with landscape to create my own fantasy worlds
I might take my work on a journey and create college landscape. I also like the simplicity of black and white images as I feel the contrast in colour gives an image more depth.
Through my project I intend to use as many processes and techniques as possible to gain a high quality project. I will use Photoshop and my skills that I already have to refine my photographs such as layers, changing the opacity the tool dodge and burn saturation blur tool and spot healing . I am also open to learning new techniques and trying different ways of manipulating my work in order to achieve a high standard of finish.
I intend to use as many processes and techniques as possible to gain a high quality project. When I am using my camera I will leave it on the manual setting so that I can change / control the images I am taking. If I am taking photos outside, I will have to constantly check my ISO,white balance, aperture, white balance and shutter speed. I will also have to consider the rules of thirds and exposing triangles in order to capture an image that is pleasing and balanced for the viewer.
I will also use my mobile phone to capture photographs as I feel it will extend my knowledge further, as I can manipulate images using Snap seed,Lens Flare. I feel that having the access to a mobile phone camera allows me to capture an image in that moment.
I hope to learn more about the theme of landscape but also how to take my work on a journey and create a really personal and meaningful project. I want to create a portfolio of work that represents my ideas I could create this portfolio through collage,a book, film or by a series of final images.
I am very excited to start this project and can not wait to see the journey that my work will go through and how I will display my personal response to the theme Landscape.

Sunrise over Haystacks, Buttermere by Martin Lawrence
Context
My project is based on researching different landscapes and textures. I am going to look at a range of different landscape photographers. The reason I have chosen to look at Martin Lawerence’s work first is because, he took photographs of the Lake District which is an area I have been to (plan to go to) and so will use his work to inspire my own photographs. Martin focuses on capturing the beauty of nature and also looks at composition to frame his images.
Connection
I hope to do something similar when I go out on location. He also seems to try and capture different times of the day, different seasons and different light, this is something I hope to do with my own work.
I am going to start my photography with looking at a landscape in Autumn to capture the golden light and the beautiful colours and so I am using Martin’s work to help me think about how to frame my shots.
Having to use the camera on manual setting so I have to keep checking or changing
This is something that Martin will of had to do when taking his photographs
Composition
When I am looking at this photography by Martin Lawrence of the Lake District, I can see that he has clearly used the rule of thirds. This is because the mountains in the top have third and the water and shoreline fill the rest of the image. The impact from using this composition technique is the image is balanced well and is pleasing to the eye.
In my opinion, I think that Martin Lawrence has used some strong leading lines in this image that helps to create a strong composition. All the lines lead to a central point (vanishing point) sweet spot
I think that the photographer has chosen a very still day to go out and take this photography. He has captured the reflection perfectly, the reflection is a mirror image of the landscape. The impact from the reflection is that it is clear and makes the tree in the image symmetrical, I also like how the trees create a shadow effect in the water allowing a darker contrast in the colours that can be seen.
When I look at the image I think the colours are quite soft and there is no harsh lighting. That makes me think that the photographer took this image late afternoon as there is a slight golden tint to the image. The time of year is summer because the trees are full of green leaves. Not like autumn where the trees would be bear or the leaves orange and brown in colour. The sky is a light blue which also shows the time of day.
He has captured a beautiful landscape in soft full colour with the greens contrasting against the blue summer sky.
There is another vanishing point in this photography which is behind the tree and goes between the mountain and gives the image some sense of depth.
Thinking about how the photographer would have taken this image, I think he would have had a really good lens on his camera that allowed him to capture the whole landscape in sharp focus, possible a telescopic lens with the depth of field a f36
I can see that the image was taken from the photographer's eye level and possibly he had to stand in the water when taking the image. This has helped him capture the image in the following way: Foreground, which is the water (pebbles) midground is the white house of the picture, distance is the mountains. The white house in the middle stands out because the colours on the house (white, red and grey) are in contrast to the soft greens and blues.
The trees in this photography play an important part in the framing and composition of the image. There is a large tree with a strong shape on the left hand side and in one third of the picture. This helps to frame the picture. Tree in the middle and the trees on the right hand side.
Comment
I really like this image as it has capture Landscape in a beautiful and calming way. I think it gives a good feeling to the viewer as it shows a place where it would be nice to be. Surrounded by quite and the beauty of nature.
I feel that I could use this inspiration of calm and beauty when I go to the lake District and create my own images. I will try to capture colour and reflections.
